Addiction is a treatable disease. Discoveries in the science of addiction have led to advances in drug abuse treatment that help people stop abusing drugs so that they can resume their productive lives. Getting an addicted person to stop abusing drugs and/or alcohol is just one part of a long and complex recovery process.
When people enter treatment, addiction has often taken over their lives; therefore treatment must address the needs of the whole person to be successful. The 12-step program is widely used in the treatment of addiction; it is a set of 12 guiding principles which outline a course of action for recovery, compulsion, or other behavioral problems. Cognitive behavioral therapy helps patients recognize, avoid and cope with situations in which they are most likely to abuse drugs and/or alcohol.
Group therapy helps patients face their drug abuse realistically, come to terms with its harmful consequences, and boost their motivation to stay drug free. The Find Help, Find Hope program is the only in South African which offers an extensive addiction database aimed at all those affected by addiction in one way or another. This website offers comprehensive information on addiction and facilities in South Africa within the find help, find hope programme.
